Berbere Steak Salad

This is a hearty salad with steak, and potatoes. The Spicy French dressing complements the steak nicely.


One 6oz sirloin steak, (any size will work)

1 Tablespoons Caramelized garlic olive oil

1-2 Tablespoons Berbere seasoning, available at Little Woods Herbs & Teas

3 medium Yukon Gold potatoes

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup sliced red onion

1 teaspoon each Chianti red wine vinegar, and Smoked balsamic vinegar

Cherry tomatoes, any variety

Romaine lettuce

Baby spinach

Spicy French dressing 2 Tablespoons tomato paste

2 Tablespoons good quality real mayonnaise

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1 Tablespoon sugar

2 Tablespoons Chianti red wine vinegar

2 teaspoons Smoked Balsamic vinegar

1/2 teaspoons paprika

1/4 teaspoon Smoked Sea Salt


  1. Rub Berbere seasoning generosity on both sides of the steak. Allow to rest at room temperature.

  2. Scrub potatoes and put in medium sauce pan big enough to cover with water by 2 inches, add salt and bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are just tender but still firm enough they don't fall apart. Set aside to cool while you make the rest of the salad.

  3. Slice onion thin and toss with Chianti and Smoked vinegars. Allow to marinate

  4. Whisk all the ingredients for the dressing together and set aside

  5. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium high heat and add oil.

  6. Cook steak in skillet 4 min on each side for medium rare.

  7. Remove steak and tent with foil.

  8. Cube the cooled potatoes, and cook in skillet the steak was in until crispy.

  9. To assemble salad, place lettuce and spinach on a platter. top with tomatoes, potatoes, onion, and steak. Drizzle dressing over all.

Recipe notes

This would work well with grilling the steak and potatoes. Try with chicken or roasted beets!
